Bobby East merely gave midget challengers Thursday a preview what
he’ll hope to do again in two weeks. East, who started on the tail of the 20-car
field, bobbed and weaved his way through the field and grabbed the lead from Nick Bohanon
in the final turn of the race to win the “Thursday Night Thunder” USAC Regional
Midget Car Series 50-lapper. The Brownsburg, Ind. native, who won twice in Regional
competition in 2004, was enthused about leapfrogging every car in the race. “It’s great to be back. The
Ford motor was running good. I really want to give Joe Liguori and Nick Bohanon props.
They did a great job tonight running. ”Bohanon, the runner-up by six points in
last year’s Kenyon Midget Car Series, showed he had no problems adapting to a new
series. He ran second for many laps behind Lee Stark before taking the point coming off
Turn 2 on lap six. Bohanon not only led, but gained valuable experience lapping
cars. He moved his lead to a half straightaway by lap 17 and zigzagged through slower
traffic before a caution on lap 22 bunched up the field. By then, East was in the
top 5. On the restart, Stark spun, assisting in East’s move to third. On the ensuing
restart, Bohanon distanced himself from the lapped traffic that separated him and then
second-place running Joe Liguori. East dogged Liguori for numerous laps, though was unable
to make a signature move on the outside. As the two fought the slower cars, Brad Kuhn
joined the mix. East finally disposed of Liguori on the bottom lane of Turn 2 on lap
42, and mounted his challenge on Bohanon. When lap 46 came around, East was on
Bohanon’s high side, challenging the series rookie. That sight stayed the same
over the next three laps, as the two fought to lap Deano Lennon. But East had his way on
the white flag lap. Coming off Turn 3, East pulled inches ahead, and that was the final
gap at the checkered flag. Following Bohanon were Liguori, and Nationally-licensed members
Kuhn and Mario Marietta.East said he enjoyed himself, and never downgraded the Regional
crews in his bid for the win. “This was a tough race,” East said.
“The competition didn’t consist of any slouches. Joe Liguori has come a long
way. I’ve never raced against Nick, but I know he doesn’t race like a
rookie.” Stark – who led the opening five laps – East and Adam
Schuyler were the night’s 10-lap heat winners.
